Are you kidding? This is too good to be true! are just a few of the words that pop in one's mind upon seeing these tables for the first time. Made out of solid mahogany, these tables are show stoppers. Overall, the tables are simply "sweet". A wonderful, Mahogany Tall Case or Grandfather Clock. This clock was made by the renowned clock maker Aaron Willard in Boston, Massachusetts before 1800. This is a copy of the map of Virginia out of Captain John Smith's 2 volume series that he published in the 1620's.
GATES RED OIL for furniture is a wonderful product that we are offering for your use in your home. It can be used for everyday dusting, light to heavy finish cleaning, and finish rejuvenation. This product is SILICONE FREE. This is very important for a variety of reasons. Silicone is normally added to furniture care products, and silicone penetrates any finish and bonds to the wood surface itself.
If you are looking for a furniture wax, go no further. This is the best wax we have ever seen or used! It is a wonderful combination of beeswax, carnauba, candelilla and other waxes in an oil based solvent. This combination gives it an ease of use, fast drying time, a smooth easy buff and excellent luster like no other.

I highly recommend Gates Antiques! I needed appraisals and Jay and the team were incredible. They ushered me through the process (very easy), answered all of my questions, and gave me fantastic information about my items. Jay made quick work of my appraisals and their pricing is beyond reasonable. Jay and team- Thank you for being so kind and professional. You made what could have been a very stressful experience fun and easy.

In this day and age it's exceedingly rare to encounter a businessman who takes a personal interest in a customer dilemma. But Jay Gates is one of those men. A family heirloom spinet desk of mine had been water damaged and was in the process of being restored by another business when the restorer/owner died unexpectedly while working on my desk.
The desk was only partially finished and in pieces when I reclaimed it. I contacted Gates Antiques right away, shortly before Christmas, and Jay said to bring it right in. Not only did he complete the restoration beautifully, but he prioritized the work since I had been without the desk since August. It was delivered today, magnificently restored. I'm forever grateful to Jay and his employees for stepping in and graciously taking over this project. I cannot recommend Gates Antiques too highly.

These people are expert, ethical, kind, and capable. If you need wood furniture restored, this is where you want to go. I took two mid century chests of drawers to them which had very bad surface damage, and while this is not the kind of furniture they normally deal in, they knew just exactly what they needed and what was era-appropriate. The turnaround time was very prompt and my chests came back immaculate and beautiful. I cannot recommend them highly enough! (pics are before and after images)

This is a beautiful, well curated shop! I could spend hours wandering and imagining different pieces in my home. And we were made to feel so welcome by Jay and his mother. Jay does a great job of explaining the different items / periods and processes they use to restore the antiques. Can't wait to go again!

This was my first time visiting and it did not disappoint. The family is SO sweet and I was blown away by all the beautiful pieces of history they have! They took their time showing me around and educating me on the various types of Victorian-era sofas and they were happy to answer my many questions. Very down to earth people, with a true passion for what they do. I will definitely be back!

A household flood damaged some of my very old, handmade dining room chairs! Mold! I contacted Gates Antiques to ask what my options might be - repairing, sanding, refinishing? Mr. Gates provided me with detailed information about the processes and costs. I contacted him several times, and he was more than patient. I am very thankful for his expertise and patience.

I definitely recommend this place! The Gates Antiques team are great people and true experts on antique furniture. I was researching a late 19th century cast iron bed we've had in the family for decades and owner Jay Gates came up as a leading expert on the topic. I went to their website and was amazed at the large, beautiful collection of antique beds and other pieces. So, I thought I'd take a shot at emailing Jay to ask for his insight on my antique bed.
Not only did Jay respond, he responded very quickly and shared many valuable insights on our family's vintage bed. He's clearly a giving person who loves his work. You should definitely stop in or contact them before you buy your next piece.

Too expensive for my blood, but maybe not yours! Occasionally you may spy a bargain! Classic antique pieces for the discriminating taste. Beautiful furniture, decor, lamps, artwork, rugs and so much more. Many gorgeous Asian inspired vases, plates, urns and planters. The rooms are aesthetically pleasing, perfectly appointed, like walking back in time.
I loved the wooden cupboards, the corner cupboards and all the dining room tables. I am drawn to marble top tables (I have one at home) and they have a several in the shop. I also collect pewter, and they offer a nice selection of candlesticks, serving ware and more! The inventory of mirrors, brass pieces, and glassware is something to see! The people here are helpful and knowledgeable, feel free to pick their brains!
They know antiques and history! But more than sales, they offer restoration, repair and appraising services too. For fine quality, immaculately designed antiques, this place is worth walking through the Gates!

The Gates team couldn't be nicer. And they have mostly large pieces of furniture from 1900 and older that you cannot find anywhere else. Really beautiful things from a time gone by. They are so good at what they do that they are often called on to provide items for major historical motion pictures (Spielberg's Lincoln, the new Harriet movie and even Homeland).
They didn't have anything that I was looking for, but I sure am glad I stumbled into their store. Truly nice people with a heart for and knowledge of what they do. They know their stuff!

It's often in life when we are seeking help in trying to solve a small problem that we are lucky to find a business that's willing to exceed our expectations and help find a solution that makes your day. That business for my wife and I today was Gates Antiques a long established establishment willing to give that extra time to search for that solution. Yes, Jay Gates was the man of the hour for us. Give them a call at 804 794-8472. Dan and Kathy Blanchard

Fabulous antique store - the real deal. Lots of true antiques at all price ranges. Beautiful furniture from lovely estates. Of course we took something home, my girlfriend bought a lovely setee that fit into the back of my Lexus SUV. Mr Gates, the owner, was so helpful and loaned a furniture blanket and straps. He helped put it in the car and my girlfriend 's husband and son helped at her house.
We both bought their red oil to polish and clean our other antiques. This is a delightful shop with multiple buildings, we spent several hours looking. I would highly recommend going when you are in the Richmond area. We stopped after a visit to VMFA.

While I have not yet managed to purchase anything directly from Gates, it is not for lack of interest on my part, only a lack of space. They have done some very impressive restoration work for myself and my family, however, including repairing the inlay on a ridiculously complicated desk that we adore. What cannot be found on the premises [which include large outbuildings that you can dig through if they suspect your goal can be met in the extended inventory] can be found for you for no charge, and what services are not available can be recommended from elsewhere- the Gates do not hesitate to suggest what is best for the customer, despite that occasionally meaning they direct business elsewhere. I am enchanted on every visit, and will continue to return periodically so long as I remain in the area.

Gates Antiques is one of my all time favorite stores. I always enjoy going in, as everyone is so knowable you will always learn something new. Gates, is the place to go if you are looking for a one of a kind piece. Not only are there the multiple show rooms of furniture as well as some artwork he also has the ability to find that "needle in a haystack" piece you have been looking for.
Not only do they sell antiques, they also do amazing restoration work, and will let you know what to expect before hand and if it is worth it. I recommend Gates to anyone, as it is a local family owned business, with superb personal customer service. Gates antiques has something for everyone and every budget.

Gates Antiques is professional and personal at the same time. It is a 2nd generation family business. Mr. Gates is very knowledgeable with expertise in several styles and time periods. He helped us find several unique pieces to complement our decor. He has a large inventory of items, but he will keep his eye out for a certain style/size piece; and he will even email pics from the many auctions he attends if he doesn't have a suitable item in stock.
We have also engaged Gates Antiques for several repair jobs - and if your repair project is not worth the expense, he will advise you. Plus it is tons of fun to browse the showroom and warehouse.

I have purchased items from Gates Antiques as well as requested appraisals and brought items in for restoration. Gates Antiques never disappoints. Once, Mr. Gates patiently scoured through his buildings with my husband to help him find a gift for me that matched my tastes and my husband's budget. When I received an old family heirloom that had seen better days, I brought it to him for restoration.
His work is beautiful. You can count on Mr. Gates to be direct and honest with you. He respects his customers and his depth of knowledge is impressive. Just visiting the shop is a pleasure. If you've never been to Gates Antiques, you owe it to yourself to stop by.

Gates Antiques is a wonderful antique store located in Midlothian, Va. I have been a customer for 14+ years. This is a full service store that has the most exceptional antiques in Central Va. Delivery service available. Gates has a full service restoration department. I have seen before and after pics of some of their restorations and it is amazing what they can do.
The craftsman that handles the repairs is one of the best in the state! They also sell a "red oil" that is manufactured for them under their label. I have used that product for well over a decade and will not use anything else on my antiques at home. Finally, they offer antique classes that run (I believe) for 2 months and they keep the class size small to around 6-8 if I recall. Hands on training from a family that has done this for two generations. Classes are in the evening and worth inquiring about. All in all, Gates Antiques it is a must for anyone within driving distance. You will not be disappointed!

Have been visiting Gates Antiques Ltd. for 40+ years and have always found something we couldn't live without. Depending on the item, some were pricey but so unique, the price was reasonable. The owners and team are experts in their field and very willing to share specific knowledge about the particular piece. If you haven't visited Gates Antiques and have any interest in antique furniture or decorative arts, you owe yourself a visit! You certainly will not be disappointed. Best antique store in the mid-Atlantic region! And they do superb restoration.

Holy Moly - Great find. I have lived in Chesterfield for 7 years and ventured out to regions outside of my area over last two weeks to explore antique places I have not been to. This one is incredible! There are numerous pieces here that belong in a museum! Staff was a walking history book to add commentary to each piece. Peeked in one of the two outside buildings that have basically project pieces - and they too fall into the incredible rare find category.
Personally - cost prohibitive for us. Actually, prices were likely cost prohibitive for most NY decorators on 5th Avenue. Don't let that stop you. There may be rare finds in other two buildings that are not yet ready for main show room and manger seemed much more willing to negotiate on pieces in project building. I think this is a 3rd generation family owed business and well worth a visit. Seriously, you will not be disappointed because items in their inventory do not exist on the open market.
This would be an insane business if based out of based in NY as opposed to a country road in western chesterfield. Either way - a truly great find and destination when visiting NW Chesterfield. Highly recommended: Rare finds put my rating to a 10, but price to a 1. Math may not work - so a 4 will do, but a stop by on a free day is well worth the time.

Antiques, Ltd. I inquired about the repair and was assured that the broken piece could be fixed. However, since I live in California and Gates Antiques in in Virginia I had to ship the broken piece to them. The repair was done magnificently however the pegs didn't fit back into the washstand. I contacted Mr. Gates and once again he assured me that they could repair it.
This time I made a template of where the holes and pegs needed to line up and this time everything fitted to my satisfaction. Mr. Gates and staff are truly professionals. The job was done in a timely manner and they made sure that I was satisfied with the job. By the way, the price was reasonable. I would highly recommend Gates Antiques for superior service.

Gates Antiques is not only an antique "store", but an antique restoration facility as well. There are 3 main buildings to check out; the first one houses the restoration facility, as well as the largest collection of big antique furntiture I've ever seen. It's really gorgeous stuff, and items that have been restored are noted on their price tag. It's crazy expensive, but talk about one-of-a-kind conversation pieces!
Nobody you will ever meet will have that same table or dresser that this place sells! Also some excellent artwork here as well. Another building houses many, many large pieces, most of which require repair. Yet another building holds more large pieces, again many needing repair. The second floor of this third building has a lot of old frames and chairs. There's a small room kept locked up - mainly glassware and old junk.
But this third building is part of what used to be a candy factory in Richmond. Pretty cool! They had it shipped to it's current location. And you should see those floors- super old, and they don't even CREAK! I've never seen that! Neat place to check out. They have a couple old Model A's on site which have been restored and used in movies. The people working here are totally nice and great to talk to. Great place to check out!
