Antique Japanese Lacquered Wood Zushi (Shrine), 19th c., the black lacquered shrine with two curved hinged doors opening to a gold lacquer interior draped at the top, containing a wood figure of a Tamonten (Bishamon) standing on a rocky ledge on a rectangular base; dressed in armor, a ferocious look on his face, holding a stupa or pagoda in his left hand, a halberd in the right.
The whole panel expertly hand-embroidered in lucious soft colors with a central Five-toed (lung) Dragon amidst stylized cloud scrolls and surmounted by a bat; the Dragon in gold couched metallic thread with a stem stitch outline to define and separate the dragon's scales to give them a relief effect; over a double wave design centered with a 'Lotus' (symbol of devine purity) and mountains; all skillfully embroidered in satin stitch, stem stitch, long and short stitch; a Phoenix bird at the top left and a Manchurain Crane at the top right, and two further Phoenix birds over the waves.
Impressive Old Print - Portrait of an Adoring Mother and Three Children - Old Master Painting-style - in a beautiful gilt frame with rounded corners.
