In 1975 we were living in Bangkok, Thailand, where Vichai had grown up and was then practicing architecture. I had stopped working several months before when we had our first child. A chance conversation at a party persuaded Vichai to stop in Bahrain, an island shaikhdom in the Arabian Gulf, on his way to the U.S. where we would visit my parents.
Bahrain was booming and they needed architects. I went ahead to New York with the baby. The first night Vichai arrived in Bahrain, he sketched a design for an apartment building.

Hand-drawn and handwritten, the book shows figures from Yi mythology and legend and is a handbook for rituals. Accordion folded hand-made paper has hand drawings and writing which were produced in auspicious herbal ink over time by one or more yantra masters or monks while in a meditative state. The rituals, for tattooing or drawings on paper, cloth or amulets, may incorporate Buddhism, Hinduism, astrology, numerology, cosmology and sometimes animism, in any combination to provide protection and invoke blessings from all directions of the cosmic universe.
After a number of years we return to Whitehawk at the Santa Fe Convention Center with a big double booth for Chinalai Tribal Antiques and Chinalai Modern! Preview opening Friday, 8/12/22 from 6-9pm. A quick in an out over 2 days but with two van-loads of material: doors, furniture, vintage clothing and Barbour jackets, textiles, architectural and more and more and more! The goal is to go back empty, so please come see us!
